Language Resources

Dictionaries and Character Tools:

Chinese Character Dictionary - incredibly comprehensive database which allows you to search for characters by meaning or romanisation.  Even better, you can choose what to display for the character once it is found, such as jyutping romanisation or a link to a sound file of how to pronounce it.  I use this site a lot to help me put these pages together.

xuezhongwen.net - Free online Chinese-English dictionary
MDBG free online dictionary
- this dictionary offers character and word lookups, using the Unihan and CEDICT databases as a base. It also has a brilliant Javascript chinese input tool.

FSI Cantonese Language Course - thanks to the sterling efforts of some volunteers, the entire FSI Cantonese course is now available to download for free! more information...

Mandarin Tools - this site is packed with helpful utilities such as Java flashcards and many dictionaries and conversion tools.  Note it is only concerned with mandarin and the author states that he does not have plans to add cantonese specific resources.  However, for written Chinese this site is excellent.

Cantonese Learning Centre - lots of useful Cantonese specific resources here, including a talking dictionary (Internet Explorer only).

WWWJDic - Kapanese Kanji lookup tool, has relevance for Chinese learners too (eg: you can find all character with the "heart" radical in it.

DELETED, SITES DOWN -  Dylan Sung has two websites filled with useful resources for people researching Chinese (advanced).

Misc Language Resources :

UK Federation of Chinese Schools - details of schools, exams, textbooks and more for the UK.

PopJisyo - an extremely impressive Chinese/Japanese/Cantonese dictionary interface to the web.  Try browsing this site using it to see what I mean.

Learn Chinese EZ - contains many free lessons with each word or sentence having a high quality sound file. Cantonese and Mandarin are both catered for, with extra lessons available via a reasonably priced members area. Personal tuition by the webmaster via Skype is also available.

Chinese Characters and Culture - a mandarin site but still highly recommended.

Learning Chinese Online - another extremely useful repository of links which are nicely laid out.

Languages of China - the users of this site have been extremely helpful in answering my questions.  I have also used parts of some of the posts in my "notes" sections at the bottom of the revision sheets.

Online Character Animations - lots of lessons on how to write characters correctly. Your browser will need to support Java to view them. Mandarin readings only but the animations are excellent.

Character Writing Sheets - traditional school sheets for practising to write characters.  You will need Adobe Acrobat reader software to view the sheets.

China Online - Jun Shan's comprehensive online to just about everything Chinese!

Chinese Dialects - About.com's guide to Chinese dialects (Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka, Teochew, Taiwanese and others).

MyCantonese.com - uses online forums to teach Cantonese.  This would be a nice website but it is unfortunately always very slow whenever I visit.
UPDATE:
Last time I checked this site was broken due to database errors.

Chinese-Lessons.com - this site seems excellent, it contains lessons for Cantonese and Mandarin and also has several useful essays on learning.  Be warned that it uses Yale romanisation though (this site uses Jyutping - such is life!)

StoryCola - this is a site aimed at children and contains lots of texts.  The sound files are all Mandarin but this doesn't affect the text.  Note you have to register (free) to gain access to the whole site.

www.csn23.com - many online forums for Chinese people, if your Chinese is good enough you may like to see how much you can understand!

She.com - these online forums are frequented by Cantonese speakers and therefore you can pick up a lot of colloquial Cantonese.  This will help your Cantonese as normal written texts are of course in Mandarin.

Cantonese Garden - Jackie Cheung's site has some Chinese idioms, romanised into Cantonese and very nicely explained with the background broken down into compound words.
