Thanks to everyone involved in my old St. Neots Chinese Society class, Including: Mr Lai, Jocelyn, Veronica, Virginia, Joyce, Bernadette and Edith. The excellent animated characters, featured in the Compound Words section were generously donated by Wing Ming Chan. The voice readings were kindly performed by my Father (馬志強), members of my family and several of my Cantonese teachers. In recent years contributions have been made by bernard from our forums, and Kathy from Learn Chinese EZ.. Thanks to everyone that has e-mailed me or posted on the Discussion Forums too, you have all helped motivate me to continue learning and keep this site updated. CantoDict has grown beyond all recognition as a result of a fantastic community of volunteers. They are thanked on the official site. ...and of course thanks go to my family, who all show a great deal of patience when I ask them questions and don't laugh too loudly at my bad accent . My Internet host is Designer Servers (DSVR) - they provide an extremely good service and their technical support is the best I have ever experienced. In the past, server space for the images and sounds for the site has been generously loaned by Jason, from http://jtoy.net. This was hugely appreciated, as is explained here. Currently, server space is being donated by forum user monkeymagic7, to whom I am again indebted. Thanks go to all involved with the public domain CCDICT project, especially Thomas Chin. I use CCDICT extensively when researching characters and many of the entries in this site's character dictionary have been imported from there. I haven't been able to reciprocate much, apart from the odd error report, but hope to do more in future. Technology-wise, I have used some of the following in the creation of this site: Audacity - open source audio encoder. I use this program to convert WAV files to the more web friendly MP3 format and also to clean up my recordings as best I can. I record using either a high quality stereo microphone connected to a minidisk (which gives excellent quality but is a pain to transfer to the computer) or a Pocket PC with a poor quality internal microphone (but is easy to transfer to the PC). Phorum - the open source discussion forum we use. PHP - you can see the "Powered by PHP" logo at the bottom of this page. PHP is a free, open source server side scripting language and I use it to generate many parts of this website. It saves me a great deal of time and is just generally a pleasure to code in. See also: Programming notes for this site. MySQL - a fast and free database that is in constant development. I am using this for the dynamic character driven sections such as the online game and the character list. The forums also use this database. OverlibMWS - this excellent Javascript library powers the CantoDict context-sensitive popups and the AJAX navigational aids in the discussion forums. Voodoo Chat - the best chat room system I've tried out. It works with unicode so we can chat using Chinese, Japanese etc. Voodoo Chat is open source. Stephanie Pui-Mun Law - a wonderful artist who created some of the artwork that I am planning on using to decorate this site. Stephanie sells limited edition signed prints of her work so visit her site now! MySmilies.com - I've used some of the smileys from this free site on our forums. |
